Uffizi Gallery is considered the most important art gallery to visit while visiting Florence.  Along with Accademia Gallery in Florence, visitors will get a very good exposure to Renaissance art.  Most artists featured by both of the museums are from Florence, and as you view the art you can imagine how this city was in the center of the art movement.

Uffizi Gallery

The building that houses Uffizi Gallery was originally built in 1560 and was to accommodate the offices of the Cosimo I de Medici (Grand Duke of Tuscany).  The construction was completed in 1581.  The top floor was used to house the art owned by the family.

Fun Fact: Uffizi means offices

Over the years the Medici family added more art to their collection which they displayed in this location.

There are many must see artwork at the museum but due to the large collection of paintings and artifacts, some of the works have been transferred to other museums in Florence. Most of the art collected are from 13th to 18th century and again focus mostly on Florence based artists.
