History

Oktoberfest origins have a bit of controversy as there are two stories about who came up with the idea. But in 1810 citizens of Munich were invited to attend a festival to celebrate marriage of King Ludwig I (He became the King later and was still a Prince at the time of the celebration) and his wife Therese of Saxe-Hildbughausen.
The festivities were held at the fields in front of city gates which were called Theresienwiese. To this day Oktoberfest is held at this location.
The celebrations were similar to a fair, one of the highlights of the activities were the annual horse race that were held.
It is estimated that six million visitors from around the world come to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest.
